Wang Degen: Diligence without efficiency is laziness
share to:

There are less than 100 days left in 2018, and I would like to ask you, how far have you achieved your goals for this year? Why?

The competition between enterprises boils down to the competition of efficiency. Social resources will automatically tilt towards more efficient economic organizations, while inefficient enterprises will be eliminated by the market. This is an unchanging iron law, but does this iron law always hang high in the hearts of each of us?

I have been “reviewing” the development path of our company during this period. Over the years, we have achieved a growth rate several times higher than the industry average level under very difficult conditions. But in recent years, our development speed has slowed down. Apart from necessary accumulation, is there something worth reflecting on in our work efficiency?

Perhaps, many people may feel wronged when they hear this statement, because everyone seems to be busy and talks about “diligence”. But we also have to face a new normal- some people often ask themselves: “I often work overtime, go on business trips and even work late at night, but why do I always feel like that I’m making little progress or even doing nothing?”

In fact, the key of the problem is that without efficient goal management, the brainless work is inefficient or even ineffective, and “diligence without efficiency is laziness.”

This “diligent laziness” is not an isolated phenomenon.

By careful comparison, we will find that the common problem of “inefficient strivers” lies in the lack of goal management.

Everyone talks about their goals, but for a lot of people, goals are just spreadsheets in their computers and slogans on their lips. In reality, most people are in a state of looking at what is in front of them, their minds are filled with tasks, their access to knowledge is blocked, and their ability to make rational judgments is lost. They are preoccupied with how to solve their current difficulties. In reality, they are just busy in “fighting the fire”, and “only see trees but not forests”.

The first reason is that managers at all levels lack the ability to manage goals.

Looking back on our journey of struggle, we were able to accomplish the established strategic goals smoothly or even two years ahead of schedule in the early stage of our business, even when all the conditions were not available. The reason is that we “dare to push us forward”. Everyone truly internalizes their goals as their own guide to action. “Everyone has their own indicators”, and they know the relationship between themselves and the ultimate goal of the enterprise, constantly reflect on the benchmark, and force themselves to constantly exceed and improve themselves until their personal and corporate goals are achieved.

Therefore, each of our managers must make it clear that goals are the foundation of all management affairs, and the ultimate goal of management is to achieve goals efficiently. Of course, the most important thing is that small goals are subordinate to big goals, individual goals are subordinate to overall goals, and short-term goals are subordinate to long-term goals. In this way, goals complement each other to help the enterprise achieve success.

The second reason is that there is a lack of efficient work thinking and methods in specific work.

They seldom organize and arrange what they want to do, and lack rational thinking, judgment and allocation. The so-called “strivers” always process all external information like a machine and have to give feedback quickly, and never think about their work goals or the main tasks of the day. Their brain is like a congested intersection, with cars coming and going, even as they move around, and they try their best to smooth the traffic so that everything goes the way they wish. However, they did not spend time to think about how to modify this intersection and what makes the intersection always congested.

Those who are busy all day- rushing from one activity to another- may actually be keeping busy at the cost of sacrificing effectiveness. Your goal should be productive- that is, what you do must bring you closer to your goal.

So, what is the ultimate goal of Dekon people?

Our ultimate goal is to become an outstanding enterprise and build a “high-end food ecosystem”, and to achieve this goal, we need to build a “team with goals and courage to struggle”. But I want to emphasize one thing - the spirit of struggle here is by no means a dull and reckless effort, but a pragmatic and efficient struggle. To achieve this, employees need to improve their self-awareness, and managers also need to effectively guide the awareness of struggle and teach scientific methods of struggle, and create a good atmosphere for struggle.

Because both smart work and efficient work are truly achieved under the guidance of strong goals. As long as you have an unwavering goal in your heart and are clearly aware of the relationship between team goals and personal goals, you can inspire your wisdom to achieve efficient struggle regardless of your efforts.

However, to achieve this, our team managers must always keep a clear mind, make rational and scientific judgments based on our goals, and constantly correct and revise them. On the basis of clear goals, the speed of transition between attack and defense can be achieved.

This also put forward higher requirements for our managers, that is, they should constantly improve their persistence towards goals, sensitive nerves and quick response ability.

Our managers should always be introspective, and reflect on how much effective working hours we have based on the efficiency of outstanding enterprises in the industry? How many effective jobs are there? What is the cause of low efficiency? We should think about the problems clearly and thoroughly, and then make great efforts to match resources (selecting good candidates, methods and paths), constantly identify problems and adjust them quickly.

Our team managers should not just “bury their heads in pulling carts”, but also “look up at the road” at all times. We must not use “busy” as an excuse to ignore efficiency management and atmosphere creation, because all actions that deviate from the goal are inefficient or even ineffective actions. All managers who deviate from the goal are “diligent laziness”, no matter how diligent they appear.

Therefore, our team managers must set the right management goals and learn to manage them in an effective and efficient way, because the work intensity of the team is the basic guarantee, and the team can grow rapidly only under high pressure. Moreover, efficiency is the key to achieve success in competition, which is what every team manager must always keep in mind.

It’s never too late to change.

I would like to share it with all fellow travelers of Dekon as an encouragement.
